ARA Art from Elizabeth Collins

Elizabeth Collins Bio
I attained early fame as a “diggin’ in the dirt” kind of girl. I played outside, exploring the woods around my rural Rockdale County, GA home, enjoying numerous pets, building stick forts, and making mud pies in a small creek that ran across our driveway. One of my fondest memories is of driving to my
Grandmother’s home in Flowery Branch, GA. Piled in the car with my large family and yummy potluck food, we drove up Georgia Highway 20 through Lawrenceville and Buford, passing large pastures of cattle, beautiful farm houses and bright little barns. My siblings and I made up a game called “Animals”,counting only the accepted animals we passed by on our drive…. Oh to spot a white horse for 10 bonus points! That route looks very different today. Gone are the farms and livestock filled pastures, replaced with road-widening construction and large shopping malls!

Upon graduating from high school, I knew that I wanted to live in the country and I fell in love with the beauty of Morgan County. I bought property in the midst of several family farms and built 2 homes and several studios in my little bit of paradise. I’ve always felt a deep connection with the earth. To squeeze a handful of clay in my hands and transform it is a thrill that never gets old.

My Mother taught me to appreciate nature and opened my eyes to the amazing palette before me. Collections of sticks, bones, rocks, rusted metal tidbits decorated and filled our home. Now, as an adult, I have an entire studio called “The Variations Room”, filled with trays of seashells, old glass bottles, driftwood, pebbles, and bones. I find beauty and usefulness in most everything and enjoy incorporating these treasures into my pottery and mixed media sculpture and jewelry.
